Fact or Fiction...Paseo de Mission Hills Project, Why All the Controversy?

12/01/2004

Original Story Written in the Presidio Sentinel - Vol 4, NO.12 December 2004

After 18 months of community meetings, planning, designing and redesigning, Bob Lawrence is ready for final approval and the start of construction on the Paseo de Mission Hills project located at the Northeast corner of West Washington and Goldfinch. Some residents claim that they have not known about the project, and yet, there have been numerous articles in this and other publications, numerous meetings of public organzations, several meetings held by the developer himself to get public input and meetings of various groups to discuss the project.

In this and future issues of the Presidio Sentinel we will endeavor to present the facts to end the rumors, suppositions and assumptions that have been swirling around. We will also present the very latest artist renderings of what is hoped will be a new gateway to the Mission Hills community.

Some samples of the rumors and mis-statements that are circulating and we will be following up on are:

RUMOR: The developer threatened to build a 150 high condo tower.
FACT: No such threat was ever made or even contemplated. Current zoning laws would allow such a tower, however the developer rejected such a plan from the very beginning.

RUMOR: The developer is planning to demolish buildings of historic significance.
FACT: The developer plans to remodel two of the existing structures on Washington Street to their original look. He also plans to move a single-family craftsman house on Falcon Street and has stated his desire to be mindful of any historic designation on all properties that he will develop.

RUMOR: The proposed project would further decay the appearance of the gateway to our community.
FACT: Mission Hills doesnt have an attractive gateway to the community, via Washington Street. Most residents direct guests through Presidio Hills to avoid entrance from Washington Street.

There are several other comments and claims shared by a group of individuals that has designated itself as "Mission Hills Heritage". We will attempt to find out the role of the organization, its objectives and the residency of its members, specifically, are they from Mission Hills. More on this subject will follow in the January issue.
